The Healer

When you learn to quiet your mind, you’ll hear them speaking to you.”

Qui-Gon Jinn, to Anakin Skywalker.

Midi-chlorians are microscopic, intelligent lifeforms that live within the cells of all living beings.

Since the dawn of cultural humanity, tribes and other types of societies have had healers. Today, “healer” is employed when describing traditional medicine which, according to the World Health Organization, is “the sum total of the knowledge, skills, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences indigenous to different cultures, whether explicable or not, used in the maintenance of health as well as in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement or treatment of physical and mental illness.”

The healer, however, has another dimension. A different psycho-social definition that goes beyond the typology of traditional versus modern society. It is a place every society has for that person in whom trust is bestowed as a consequence of their unique qualities and their hard earned initiation. All healers are people who went underwater, into the darkness of chaos, where disharmony is born, and came back whole. Because they are familiar with chaos, they are the only ones who can restore balance.

Health has many different definitions. Again, according to the WHO, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Good, but not good enough: we still need to understand pathology, and stop pathologizing things that are cultural and stop overlooking obviously unhealthy (unbalanced) expressions of human physiology and behavior. Medicine has a long way to go, but it is going.

Among those who practice medicine and the healing sciences, there are practitioners (good, excellent, mediocre and bad) and real healers.

Yes, these people exist and they walk among us. They hide in clear sight. They are regular doctors, PTs, dietitians and coaches. Yet, they are healers. They carry the ancient tradition of restoring balance where it is lost. They have all gone to the underworld to learn it and be initiated. Sometimes they carry heavy scars.

You know them as they look into your eyes. They carry their mission in silence and in secrecy. They came to heal, to restore balance. To put together the pieces of those who’ve been fragmented. To fix damages. But only – and that is something they share with the High Priests – if you ask.

These people will always exist, until the last day of our species on Earth. It is hard to believe it, considering how corrupt medical institutions have become. These rare humans exist and they walk through the interstices.

I don’t have any explanation of why, except that maybe this is the nature of societies: we need them, there are those among them there are born with the right qualities, they fulfill the role, period.

This is about Dani Overcash. She looks like a normal person. A beautiful girl, very smart, highly educated, with a Ph.D. in Physical Therapy and a special ability to translate its scientific technicalities into practical advice.

Underneath her normal existence is the Healer. She will look at you and she will understand imbalance. And she will work to restore balance. Because that is what she does. Heir to the oldest shamans or to our post modern Jedis.

That is what she does.
